Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about payments, verification, hosting and support, all in one place.

General

How does payment work on Nolex?

When you book, the rental price, the security deposit, and any damage coverage are charged together through Stripe, a widely used payment provider. Nolex never sees or stores your card details — everything runs through Stripe's secure infrastructure, not our own servers. The security deposit protects the host in case of damage or a missing return; damage coverage, when the listing includes it, covers minor issues that can happen during normal use. If the rental ends with no issues reported by the host, both the deposit and any damage coverage are refunded automatically to the same card used for payment, with no request needed on your part.

Do I need to verify my identity to rent something?

Yes: before completing your first booking you need to verify your identity through Stripe Identity, Stripe's identity verification service. It's a one-time check that takes just a few minutes — usually an ID document and a photo are enough — and it protects both renters and hosts by reducing the risk of fake accounts or bad-faith behavior. Once verified, your identity stays valid for every future booking, so you never have to repeat it. Hosts go through an equivalent check for their own listing activity (KYB), so the safety works in both directions.

Who can publish a listing and become a host on Nolex?

Anyone: someone who wants to rent out a single item they don't use often, or a business with a whole catalog. Just create a free host profile in a few minutes and complete a one-time check (KYB) before publishing your first listing. Once you're set up, you decide the daily price, the security deposit, and any damage coverage for each item, and receive booking requests and payouts directly through Stripe Connect. If you work with other people, you can also invite them to your host profile with owner or operator roles, to manage listings and bookings together.

How it works

How long does identity or host (KYB) verification take?

Usually just a few minutes. For renters, identity verification through Stripe Identity needs a valid ID document and a photo, and it's a one-time step: once completed, it covers every future booking. For hosts, business verification (KYB) asks for a bit more information — details about the business and, where applicable, its owner — but follows the same principle: it happens once, before you can publish your first listing, not on every booking or new listing after that. In both cases the process runs entirely through Stripe, not separate forms or emails, so it stays quick and built into your Nolex account. If verification is rejected, you can correct the details and try again.

What happens if an item comes back damaged?

If the listing includes damage coverage, it's charged alongside the security deposit at booking time and covers minor issues the host reports within the rental's window. If nothing is reported, both the deposit and any damage coverage are refunded to the customer automatically, with no request needed. If the host does report damage, they can open a support request directly from their bookings panel describing the issue; from there it's handled together with Nolex's own support team to check the coverage and next steps, keeping a full record of the conversation between both parties inside the platform.

How do you rent an item on Nolex?

To rent on Nolex you start by searching for what you need in your area: you browse listings by category and open a listing to see its photos, price, deposit and availability. Before your first booking you complete a one-time identity check through Stripe Identity, which takes just a few minutes and protects both renters and hosts. When you are ready, you pick your dates and book. The rental price, the security deposit and any optional damage coverage are charged together through Stripe, so Nolex never sees or stores your card details. Your email address and phone number stay hidden from the host until the booking is confirmed. After the rental ends, if the host reports no problems, the deposit and the damage coverage are refunded automatically to the card you paid with, with no request needed. You can follow the status of every booking from its detail page in the app.

How do you earn money as a host on Nolex?

Anyone can become a host on Nolex, whether you rent out a single camera or manage a whole catalog. You start by creating a free host profile, which is called a business in the app, and completing a one-time verification (KYB) before you publish your first listing. The details the verification asks for depend on your situation and are shown during the process. Then you add photos, a price, a security deposit and the quantity available, and publish when you are ready. Customer payments arrive directly in your Stripe account through Stripe Connect, which you link during setup: the rental amount is credited once a booking is confirmed and paid, while the security deposit is held until the rental ends. You can invite teammates as owners or operators, and only owners can access payments. Every host also has a dedicated support queue to answer customers.

What happens after you book an item on Nolex?

After you book on Nolex, the payment goes through Stripe and the booking appears in your profile, where you can follow its status from start to finish. Your email address and phone number stay hidden until the booking is confirmed; once it is, you can coordinate pickup and return with the host, who can also reach you. You collect the item, use it for the agreed period and give it back. When the rental ends, the host has the chance to report any problem. If there is none, the security deposit and any damage coverage you paid are refunded automatically to the same card, with nothing to request. If the host does report damage, they open a support request from their bookings panel, and the case is handled together with Nolex support, with the whole conversation kept inside the platform. Once the rental is complete you can also leave a review.

What changes between renting and hosting on Nolex?

Renting and hosting on Nolex start from the same account but follow different paths. As a renter you search for items nearby, verify your identity once through Stripe Identity and book with a payment that covers the rental price, the deposit and any optional damage coverage; your personal contact details stay hidden until the booking is confirmed, and the deposit is refunded automatically when the rental ends without issues. As a host you create a free host profile, called a business in the app, and complete a one-time verification (KYB) before publishing your first listing. You choose the photos, price, deposit and damage coverage, link Stripe Connect to receive payments directly, and the deposit is held until the rental ends. Hosts can also invite teammates as owners or operators, while renters cannot. On both sides you only verify once.

Become a host

Do I need a registered business to become a host?

It depends on your situation: the host profile on Nolex (called a "business" on the site, for consistency with the app) is meant for both an individual renting out a single item and a company with a whole catalog. The information the check (KYB) needs, including a VAT number where applicable, depends on your situation and is shown during the process. What matters is completing verification before publishing your first listing, so Nolex can confirm there's a real person or business behind every host, for the benefit of whoever books.

How and when do I get paid for my rentals?

Customer payments arrive through Stripe Connect, linked to your host profile during initial setup. Every time a booking is confirmed and paid, the rental amount (net of the security deposit, which stays held until the rental ends) is credited to your connected Stripe account, following Stripe's normal payout timing to your bank account. You don't have to handle invoices or manual payment requests — the whole flow, from booking to final payout, runs through the platform. You can check the status of every booking, including the amount received, directly from your host panel.

Can more than one person manage my host profile?

Yes. From your host profile you can invite teammates by email and assign them an owner or operator role: both can manage listings, bookings, and messages with customers, but only owners have access to the payments section and Stripe Connect setup. This lets you, for example, have an operator handle day-to-day requests while keeping control over payments limited to whoever opened the host profile. Every team member signs in with their own personal account, so it's always clear who replied to a message or accepted a booking.

Who can become a host on Nolex, and what can you rent out?

Anyone who owns something others might want to borrow can become a host on Nolex, from a private person with a single item to a company with a full catalog. Typical items are cameras, clothing and sports gear, and the listing is yours to describe: you add photos and a description, set the daily price, decide on a security deposit, choose whether to offer optional damage coverage, and say how many units are available. Every listing clearly shows its photos, daily price, security deposit and any damage coverage, so renters know what to expect. The host profile, called a business in the app, is free, and the details the verification asks for are shown during the process. The only requirement before your first listing goes live is a one-time verification (KYB) that usually takes a few minutes. After that you publish when you are ready and start receiving booking requests.

How do hosts manage bookings, payments and a team on Nolex?

Everything a host needs is managed from the host panel. Each booking shows its status and the amounts involved, and you can accept bookings and follow them through to the final payout. Payments arrive directly in your Stripe account through Stripe Connect, which you link once during setup: the rental amount is credited when a booking is confirmed and paid, and then paid out to your bank following Stripe's normal timing, while the security deposit stays held until the rental ends. You can invite teammates by email and give each one the owner or operator role. Both roles manage listings and bookings, but only owners can open the payments section and the Stripe Connect setup. Every team member signs in with a personal account, so it is always clear who replied to a customer or accepted a booking. Your host profile also has its own support queue, with the option to escalate difficult cases to Nolex support.

Trust & safety

Does Nolex see or store my credit card details?

No. Every payment — whether you're renting an item or receiving a payment as a host — runs through Stripe, the payment provider the platform uses. Your card details are entered directly into Stripe's secure forms and never pass through Nolex's own servers: we only receive confirmation that the payment succeeded, not the card numbers themselves. The same applies to identity verification through Stripe Identity: Nolex receives the verification result, not copies of the documents you upload. This reduces the risk in the event of a security issue, because the most sensitive data never lives in our systems in the first place.

What stops another user from contacting me before I accept a booking?

Messages between renters and hosts happen inside the Nolex platform itself, not through personal email or phone numbers. Until a booking is confirmed, the other party can message you and see your name, but they don't have access to direct contact details like email or phone — those only become visible after confirmation, once it makes sense to coordinate pickup or drop-off. This protects both customers and hosts from unwanted contact before there's an actual agreement in place, and it always leaves a written record of the conversation inside the app in case it's ever needed later.

How do payments and deposits work on Nolex?

Every payment on Nolex goes through Stripe, and Nolex never stores card numbers: card details are entered in Stripe's secure forms, and Nolex only receives confirmation that the payment succeeded. At checkout the renter is charged three things together: the rental price, a refundable security deposit and, when the listing offers it, optional damage coverage. The deposit protects the host if an item is damaged or not returned. When the rental ends and the host reports no problems, the deposit and the damage coverage are refunded automatically to the same card, without any request from the renter. For hosts, the rental amount is credited to their connected Stripe account through Stripe Connect and then paid out to their bank following Stripe's normal payout timing, while the deposit stays held until the end of the rental. The whole flow, from booking to final payout, runs inside the platform, and every booking shows its status and amounts.

How does identity verification work on Nolex?

Nolex checks who is on both sides of a rental. Renters verify their identity once, before their first booking, through Stripe Identity: it is a one-time check that takes just a few minutes, and Nolex receives the result of the verification rather than copies of the documents you upload. Hosts go through their own verification, called KYB (know your business), before they can publish a first listing. It collects the information needed to confirm there is a real person or business behind every listing, and it works for individuals renting out a single item as well as for companies with a full catalog. Beyond these checks, personal contact details such as email and phone number stay hidden until a booking is confirmed, so nobody is contacted before there is an actual agreement. Together these steps are designed to make each rental safer for everyone involved, without asking for more than is needed.

Is it safe to rent between private individuals on Nolex?

Nolex is built so that both sides of a rental are protected before, during and after it. Before a booking, renters verify their identity once through Stripe Identity, and hosts complete a one-time business verification (KYB) before they can publish a first listing, so there is a real person or business behind every listing and every booking. During the rental, all payments go through Stripe and Nolex never sees or stores card details, while personal contact details such as email and phone stay hidden until the booking is confirmed. The security deposit protects the host if an item is damaged or not returned, and any optional damage coverage handles minor problems from normal use. After the rental, if there are no reports, the deposit and the damage coverage are refunded automatically. If anything goes wrong, both renters and hosts can open a support request from inside the app.

What happens if something goes wrong with a rental on Nolex?

If an item comes back damaged, the host can open a support request from their bookings panel and describe the problem. The request is then handled together with Nolex support, which checks whether damage coverage applies and what the next steps are, and the communication between the parties is always kept inside the platform. The security deposit exists exactly for these cases: it protects the host if an item is damaged or not returned, and damage coverage, when the listing offers it, is meant for minor problems that can happen during normal use. If the host reports nothing by the end of the rental, both amounts go back to the renter's card automatically, with no request needed. Renters can use the FAQs and support tickets in the app, and every host has their own support queue with the option to escalate complex cases to Nolex support. Nolex never stores your card details.
